SAXTONS RIVER -- Main Street Arts will offer "The Birds’ Christmas Carol" as its annual musical gift to the community on Saturday and Sunday at 4 p.m.
The multi-generational performance is based on Kate Douglas Wiggin’s sentimental tale from the 1880s portraying the true spirit of Christmas. It is directed by Mary Hepburn, with a choir led by Eric Robinson.
Refreshments will be served after the program.
There is no admission charge for the concert, but donations for Main Street Arts are welcome. Those attending are encouraged to bring a donation of non-perishable food for Our Place Drop-in Center in Bellows Falls.
The story line follows the efforts of Carol Bird, a loving and generous bedridden 10-year-old, to put on a Christmas celebration for the nine Ruggles children, a poor, working-class family living near the Birds.
Since 1888, this bittersweet holiday classic has been cherished by generations of young readers, reminding them of the true nature of Christmas through a child’s joyful and generous spirit.
