BRATTLEBORO -- On Sunday at 4 p.m., Boston-based Yuka’s Band will perform at The Open Music Collective in the Cotton Mill. This show will feature jazz ambassador and master drummer Joe Hunt and Mike Harrist on bass.
This band, led by Yuka Hunt, plays authentic jazz with roots deep in jazz history. Also a classical pianist, her piano style is influenced by Teddy Wilson and Thelonious Monk, and she sings songs from the American songbook, revisiting them in unique ways.
Mike Harrist was one of the first students and "graduates" of the OMC program in Brattleboro. As a student of Marlboro College he graduated in 2010 but stayed in the area to finish music studies and perform with Phil Bloch, the Windham Orchestra and the Keene Chamber Orchestra. After moving to Boston, Harrist connected with Jonathan Pfeffer of Capillary Action for national and world tours, reunited with Marlboro music partner Zach Pearson in Amernouche and is finishing a recording with Tobey LaRoche in Sol & Kiel.
Joe Hunt is a jazz drummer, educator, author and historian. In the 1960s, he performed and recorded with George Russell for releases on Decca and Riverside. Hunt joined The Stan Getz Quartet in 1964, recording several releases on Verve, then was a member of the Bill Evans Trio from 1966-1967. Hunt has also performed or recorded with Chet Baker, Eric Dolphy, Dizzy Gillespie, Dexter Gordon, Charles Mingus, John Scofield, Kenny Burrell, Joe Lavano,
The quintet will include saxophonists: Greg Badolato and Andy Voelker.
