BRATTLEBORO -- Jessie Haas, author of American Girl’s Girl of the Year books for 2013, "Saige," and "Saige Paints the Sky," will speak at Brooks Memorial Library on Tuesday, April 16, at 2 p.m.

Saige is American Girl’s Girl of the Year 2013; a fourth-grader from Albuquerque, N.M., who loves horses and art, and finds she has to fight for both. In the first book, her struggle includes training a horse to do tricks as part of an arts fundraiser. In the second book, Saige organizes a demonstration at her school to raise awareness. The stories also explore changing friendships, clicker training and a warm inter-generational relationship between Saige and her artist-grandmother, Mimi.

Haas has written 37 books for children and adults, including "Bramble and Maggie" and "Horse Crazy." On April 16, she will talk about writing for American Girl, how it compares to working with other publishers and how her personal interests (including horse training and activism) found a place in these books. Saige is also an American Girl doll, available during 2013.

The American Doll company has donated "Saige," the 2013 American Doll to the Brooks Memorial Library. The doll will be raffled along with the two "Saige" books autographed by Jessie Haas. Raffle tickets are $1 or six for $5, and the proceeds will benefit the Children’s Room activities and programs.

The Children’s Room is also planning craft activities for the event.
