BRATTLEBORO >> The Brattleboro Music Center announces the Windham Orchestra's first concert of the 2016: STARS. The Windham Orchestra's fabulous wind soloists are highlighted in this concert that is taking place Friday, Jan. 15, 7:30 p.m., Vermont Academy, Saxtons River and Sunday, Jan. 17, 3 p.m, at Latchis Theatre, 50 Main St., Brattleboro. Each soloist is locally cultivated and admired and nationally accomplished. Seven wind soloists, all women, join the orchestra in works from 1849 to 1949.

We highlight the Windham Orchestra's fabulous wind soloists in this concert, each one locally cultivated and admired and nationally accomplished. Last season Jessica Murrow opened the door with Strauss' Oboe Concerto, an artistic triumph. This season we have seven wind soloists, all women, to join us in works from 1849 to 1949.

Copland's Clarinet Concerto is played by revered clarinetist and former area resident, Karen Bressett. We honor Karen's artistry and accomplishments as she plays this work written for jazz legend Benny Goodman. With moods moving from serene to virtuosic and charmingly jazzy, it will be an unforgettable experience having Karen return to be our soloist.

Few ensembles take on Schumann's Concert-Piece for Four Horns and Orchestra, as it is hair-raisingly difficult. Karen Horton, Chris Mortensen, Hilary Ledebuhr and Fleur Barnes-Rowell are our solo quartet of French Horns, they are simply extraordinary, and they and the orchestra are preparing for an athletic, muscle-flexing romp.

Short works by Romantic composers Reinecke and Elgar played by flutist Kimi Hasegawa and bassoonist Diane Lipartito round out a richly varied evening. The moods are lyrical, conversational, sad and humorous.

To complete the program, the Windham Orchestra will play Mendelssohn's Fingal's Cave, one of the great seascapes and fantasy narratives in music.

The Orchestra invites the audience to name their ticket price, choosing from $5 to $50 for admission. To purchase tickets go online at or call the BMC at 802-257-4523.
