PUTNEY >> On Jan. 23 at 1 and 3 p.m. Sandglass will kick off the popular Winter Sunshine series, with favorite shadow puppeteer, Jim Napolitano and his show "Shadows Around the World". This show will be the first of three fun family performances spaced throughout the winter. The performance is geared towards young audiences, but promises an entertaining and enjoyable experience for adults as well. Napolitano calls shadow puppetry "the most magical and cinematic" form of puppetry, and considers puppetry a form of story-telling. Napolitano tells audiences that stories are the key to learning about a culture. "Stories teach us what the tellers think are important and what they/we value," he said.
Sandglass Theater's Winter Sunshine series is Southern Vermont's favorite puppet theater event for young audiences. Winter Sunshine provides a lively respite from the cold, a creative interlude between snow shoveling and wood schlepping, and the shine of laughter through the darkness of our Vermont winter months. Sandglass is headed into its 9th year of producing our family series. This series aims to bring some laughter, cheer and entertainment to family audiences, offering a range of live puppetry and theater performances for affordable prices.
This year Sandglass will be introducing the Winter Sunshine puppet, handmade by co-founder Ines Zeller Bass herself. This lovable puppet will be raffled off through the duration of our series in order to help support the continuation of these events. Audiences can partake in hot chocolate and freshly baked concessions and enjoy the amazing antiques of our guest entertainers.
Jim Napolitano is a native of Milford, Conn., and a graduate of the University of Connecticut's Puppet Arts Program. After completion of his degree, Jim worked with Bits and Pieces Puppet Theater. He performed around the country and around the world, including The National Culture Center in Japan and The National Theater in Taiwan.
