BRATTLEBORO >> This Valentine's Day is your chance to be entertained by an up-and-coming standup comedian – who is surely headed for stardom – and say, "I knew him when ..." Vernon native Kendall Farrell will be at the River Garden hosting "Standup for Bernie," a Bernie Sanders benefit, performing alongside an impressive lineup of fellow comedians. Fans of comedy and of Sanders will enjoy this night of laughter, live music and political activism.
Farrell, who took home the title of Vermont's Funniest Comedian at Burlington's Comedy Club competition, is bringing his form of humor home for the first time. Farrell, who grew up in Vernon with his parents who own the Vermont Woods Studio, has been honing his comedic skills for merely a year and half. In the summer of 2014 while in Boston for a video marketing internship he thought he'd give standup a try while in a place where there was a lot happening in the comedy scene. It was something he'd always want to do. He really liked it, and he was really good.
Then he moved to Burlington to find that Burlington's comedy scene was just as hopping as Boston's with three to four open mic events every week.
He is no longer pursuing video marketing as a career, instead focusing on his comedy, and has performed in places from New York City to Montreal and towns in between. Farrell said, "I'm really excited to have this line up. I'm hosting but will also be doing comedy, I do have a lot of political material, I love Bernie. A lot of comedians are passionate about Bernie. We (comedians) crave honesty and we see that in him. Half of the performers in this show have already done Bernie benefits. If you are an fan of Bernie Sanders you'll love it."
Joining him on the lineup are: Jessie Baade, Bitsy Biron, Carmen Lagala, Sam Evans, Shawn Carter, and Phoebe Angle, plus live music by The Mary Jane Jones.
Another local resident who is part of the show is Jessie Baade. She has been doing standup comedy since 1990 with many credentials under her belt. She is excited to do this show and will be taking full advantage of being able to use political material. She noted that normally in paying gigs she can't upset the room if not of the same political vein - it's just not funny – for this event all are of the same viewpoint so she can go full tilt on this political cause she believes in. Besides, she needs to keep it clean!
Baaed said, "Kendall is crazy good. I've seen a lot of people get famous – he's got that ... he's that good. And I'm just excited to be from the place he's from." She added, "The talent in Burlington is great, but Kendall, he's the cream of the crop up there."
Farrell is donating 100 percent of the proceeds to the Sanders campaign and hopes to raise over $1,000. With a capacity of 300 people at the River Garden, it could be more! The more people that come, the more money they'll raise for Sanders.
As a thank you to everyone who has been working so hard on his campaign, anyone with an @berniesanders.com email address will be let into the event free of charge.
There will be a cash bar with drinks and desserts courtesy of local restaurant, Duo.
