Strolling of the Heifers Presents Walk for Amber StorySlam on April 30 at the River Garden, 157 Main St., Brattleboro, at 7 p.m.
Based on the enthusiastic response to the 2015 StorySlam, organizers are expecting a large turnout this year. A StorySlam is a competitive storytelling "open mic." With a panel of 6 judges and an engaging comedian host, it will be an interactive and entertaining storytelling event. Contestants are selected who volunteer from the audience to tell a 5-minute, true story related to the theme for the evening. This year the Walk for Amber StorySlam theme is "Things That Matter." Related to the theme, this year contestants will have the option of using one prop or "thing" to help illustrate their story. The judges will rate the stories and determine the winning story for a prize package from Mocha Joes café and coffee roasters.
Proceeds from the StorySlam support the Amber Marie Bernier Scholarship Fund, which is distributed yearly to qualifying students graduating from Brattleboro Union High School. Amber Bernier was a 17-year-old BUHS senior who died just prior to her graduation in 2004. She was a beloved student, remembered for her kindness, beauty and style. The Walk for Amber is a series of annual fundraising events including the StorySlam, the Walk for Amber Walkathon, a raffle and a dinner which will be held this year on June 5, 2016. This is the eleventh Walk for Amber fundraiser.
