READSBORO >>Confluence gallery in Readsboro opens its third show of the season with paintings and blown glass sculpture by Wilmington artist Jen Violette.
Violette's paintings are inspired by her rural Vermont surroundings — barns, farmhouses and rolling hills. Colorful and graphic in their simplified geometric forms, they are bold contemporary statements. Many of the paintings in this show at Confluence will be new, never before exhibited work.
Working from photographs taken as she travels throughout the state, Violette says, "I love to study the vibrancy and subtlety of colors in the Vermont hillsides and landscape, and to paint the essence of objects such as barns, trees, hillsides, clouds — I use many thin wash layers, until I get it just right."
The artist is an avid gardener and her unique glass sculptures evince her love of the world of fruits and vegetables. Carrots, radishes, pears, and apples modeled in glass abound, attached to wall or table mounts, cheery and adept interpretations of the real thing.
Violette got her BFA degree from Alfred University, and went on to study at Rhode Island School of Design, Pilchuck Glass School, Haystack Mountain School of Crafts, The Studio at the Corning Museum of Glass, and Penland School of Crafts.
She has won awards for her glasswork at Art on the Mountain, Weston Craft Show, the Philadelphia Museum of Art Craft Show, and the American Craft Council Show in Baltimore, among others.
Confluence gallery's exhibit of Violette's paintings and glass sculpture will run from Aug. 6 to Sept. 4 The public is invited to an artist's reception on August 12th from 5-7. The gallery is open Saturdays, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., and Sundays, noon to 4.
Founded in 2016, Confluence is a project of Readsboro Arts. It is located in the Bullock Building on Main street in Readsboro, showing and selling a rotating selection of art by diverse artists in a wide variety of media. Readsboro Arts is a locally grown nonprofit arts group founded in 2006 to benefit residents and artists throughout the region.
