BRATTLEBORO >> Friends of Music at Guilford presents the Vermont Virtuosi Flute Ensemble, seven of the finest orchestral and solo flutists in New York, Vermont, and New Hampshire, at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 1, in the sanctuary of St. Michael's Episcopal Church. The Barre Montpelier Times-Argus says, "Vermont Virtuosi concerts are now among the most rewarding chamber music performances in the state."
"Pipe Dreams 5" is the back-by-popular-demand fifth public program by Vermont's only professional flute choir. Playing five different types of flute, from petite piccolo to colossal contrabass, the ensemble will perform transcriptions of the Overture to Candide by Bernstein, Concerto III ("Il Gardellino") by Vivaldi, "A Bird in the Woods" by Doppler, "Golliwog's Cakewalk" by Debussy, "Summertime" by Gershwin, and "The Typewriter" by Leroy Anderson, in addition to arrangements of works by Philippe Gaubert, Joachim Andersen, and Elder Joseph Brackett. Works by Vermont composers David Gunn ("Phonographic Memories") and Dennis Báthory-Kitsz ("I Come With My Face Burnt"), this latter a recent Vermont Virtuosi commission, are also featured on the program.
Members of the ensemble are Robin Cameron-Phillips, Hilary Goldblatt, Alison Hale, Anne Janson, Melissa Mielens, Norman Thibodeau, and ensemble director and Vermont Virtuosi artistic director Laurel Ann Maurer. Their bios are replete with impressive academic credentials and awards; prestigious positions as performers, educators, and recording artists; and wide-ranging experience in the region, further afield in New England, across the United States, and in some cases around the world.
The performance at St. Michael's Episcopal Church, at the corner of Putney Road and Bradley Ave. in Brattleboro, is sandwiched between Virtuosi concerts in Burlington and Montpelier on Sept. 30 and Oct. 2. The Brattleboro event is funded in part by generous grants from Brannen Brothers Flutemakers and Verne Q. Powell Flutes, with additional support from Trust Company of Vermont. General admission is $15, $10 for students.
