BRATTLEBORO -- The Brattleboro American Legion Post No. 5 honored Sherwood Lake Sr. on Sept. 7 for his service to the Post and to veterans.
Lake served as a detective in the Brattleboro Police Department until his retirement in 1995. He resides with his wife, Lauria, in Brattleboro.
Lake stepped down in June as chair of the Executive Committee at Post 5. He was first elected to this position in 1996.
During his tenure, Lake was responsible for the financial management and operation of the club and his skill and prudence were crucial elements in the success of the Post.
At the dinner dance held to honor him, a Proclamation from the Brattleboro Selectboard and a commendation from Gov. Peter Shumlin were read and presented to Lake.
Barry M. Costello, retired Vice Admiral and Commanding Officer of the Third Fleet, was the guest speaker.
Lake was the leader at Post 5 in many of the activities of the Post and was particularly instrumental in the recognition ceremonies of the World War II veterans.
