NEWFANE -- The NewBrook Volunteer Fire and Rescue Department of Newfane announces the completion of its major project, in the works since last year, to overhaul its Pierce Saber pumper-tanker, designated 23-Engine 3. This truck, which has been in service since 1996, has recently returned from the Pierce Manufacturing Company’s plant in Appleton, Wis., following about three months’ worth of extensive renovation and upgrading of its principal systems.

Work on 23-Engine 3 has included rebuilding its 1,000-gallon-per-minute pumping equipment with new plumbing, gauges, and valves. The truck has been equipped with a foam fire-suppression system, and all compartments have been redesigned for improved access and convenience. In addition, all scene lighting has been replaced, a backup camera has been installed for safety, and new finish work and detailing have been added.

According to Todd Lawley, NewBrook’s Chief, "Pierce has done its usual excellent job, and today we have what is effectively a new truck. Now all we have to do is pay for it."

The total cost of the overhaul of Engine 3 will come to about $150,000. As NewBrook is a private department, most of this cost will be met by contributions from the communities the department serves.
