BRATTLEBORO >> Artwork by the children of people who work at Elliot Street Fish, Chips & More will hang in the restaurant for Gallery Walk in August.
Restaurant co-owner Olivia DeWolfe noted that her children, Edith, 11, and Josiah, 8, are home schooled and have not had a chance to demonstrate their artwork. DeWolfe and her husband Chuck, a local artist himself, decided to empower their children and the other staff's children in this way by displaying their kids' recent mixed media artworks on the restaurant walls during the month of August. The show begins on Aug. 5 during Gallery Walk.
"It's a venue for home schoolers to showcase their projects or artwork. It's important for them to have projects that are complete, with a deadline and accountability and for them to have the pride of showing their work," said DeWolfe.
Other children who will display their work include: Ella Scaggs, 10; Pearl Scaggs, 5; Graham Scaggs, 2; Allison Corey, 11; Lilia Paine, 8; and Evelyn Paine, 5.
In addition to the artwork, visitors during Gallery Walk may also enjoy a sweet treat made by the children — cookies.
Josiah said he enjoys drawing monsters of any sort. On the other hand, his sister, Edith prefers to draw "real-life" things and animals such as flower vases, birds or her cat, Mani. Edith said that art is often her expressive outlet.
"I feel like art expresses myself," said Edith. "I'd draw angry pictures when angry and when I'm sad I draw sad pictures."
DeWolfe adds that all of the kids have participated in Gallery Walk in some shape or form for a long time. Some of the older kids have learned business skills such as customer service or even how to manage the register at the restaurant. Chuck adds that while the restaurant is run by DeWolfe and Erin Scaggs, all of the family is on board.
"It's a family restaurant, and even though it's run by these two cool moms, the dads and kids have to support the restaurant as well," said Chuck. "This is a way to celebrate all of them at the same time."
Elliot Street Fish, Chips & More is open Tuesday through Saturday from 11:30 a.m. To 8 p.m. It offers wraps, salads, organic regional ingredients, falafel, fries, fish and chips, chicken, and coffee as well as gluten-free, vegetarian and vegan options.
