DUMMERSTON -- There will be Celtic and Gospel music in Dummerston Sunday morning, Sept. 9. Bruce Freeberg and his son Caleb from Windsor perform on a variety of stringed instruments, including guitar, mandolin, fiddle, and banjo. It will be an opportunity to sing some of the "Old Favorites."

Worship at the Dummerston Congregational Church UCC in Dummerston Center begins at 9:30 a.m. The scripture this Sunday is Mark 8: 27-38 and Jesus’ penetrating question, "Who Do You Say that I Am?" The sermon is "Where, When, How, Why and Where is Jesus in Your Life?"

The children’s story will focus on I Samuel 15-16, David is Chosen to be King. Children begin in worship and go to an open classroom. After worship, a video by Theresa Maggio will be shown made of the Apple Pie Festival and Preparation in 2011.

In the front of the sanctuary is a replica of the Western Wall, part of the retaining wall built around the Temple built in Jerusalem by Herod the Great before the time of Christ. The Wall has been a pilgrimage place for Jews for centuries, where they come to pray and slip written prayers into the chinks in the Wall. Anyone may write a prayer and put it in the wall in the sanctuary. It will remain up through September.

Each Wednesday there is a contemplative prayer service in the candlelit sanctuary from 6 to 7 p.m. for time out of the busy pace of life and shared silence in God’s peace. The first choir

rehearsal of the fall will be held on Thursday, Sept. 13, at 7 p.m. The choir, under the direction of the Rev. Dr. Larrimore Crockett, sings about once a month and welcomes new members. The youth group, for grades 7-12, has its fall organizing cookout and meeting on Thursday, Sept. 13, from 6 to 8 p.m. All Dummerston youth are invited to participate regardless of church affiliation. Activities planned for the youth group this fall are a trip to the Bromley Mountain Adventure Park, a haunted hayride, and making and selling ice cream for the Apple Pie Festival to help fund their activities for the year.

A Community Cookout and Games Night will be held on Friday, Sept. 14, from 6 to 8 p.m. Those attending should bring a dish to share and a favorite game. From chess to puppets to hide and seek to jigsaw puzzles to just visiting, there will be something fun for everyone. All are welcome.

The church continues to collect food, personal care items and household goods for the Drop-In Center. Church World Service School bags are being filled; the Dummerston Women’s Association provides the school bags and each bag is filled with: One pair of blunt metal scissors (rounded tip), three 70-count spiral notebooks or notebooks totaling 200-210 pages (no loose-leaf or filler paper), one 30-centimeter ruler (12-inch), one hand-held pencil sharpener, one large eraser, six new pencils with erasers, one box of 24 crayons (only 24) and $2 for shipping. These bags go to disaster and refugee areas to help children begin to return to normal in the midst of chaos.

The annual meeting of the congregation will be held on Wednesday, Sept. 12, at 7 p.m. Copies of the annual report and Picture Directory are in the church entrance.
