WEST BRATTLEBORO -- This Sunday is the 16th Sunday After Pentecost at First Congregational Church, United Church of Christ, 880 Western Ave. in West Brattleboro. The Rev. Joe Amico continues with his sermon series at worship service at 10 a.m. on the New Testament Book of James. His sermon will be "Do You Eat With That Mouth?" based on James 3:1-12.
Organist/Choir Director George Soulos will play the church’s 111-year-old tracker organ. The prelude will be "Andante Cantabile" by P.E. Bach and Postlude, "Allegro Vivace" by G.B. Sammartini. The senior choir will sing "The Heavens Resound" by Beethoven. Congregational hymns will be "For the Beauty of the Earth," "How Like a Gentle Spirit" and "God, Speak to Me, That I May Speak." Guitarist Jeff Brewer will play gathering music.
After taking the summer off, pancake breakfasts are starting up this Sunday from 8 to 9:30 a.m. The menu includes pancakes, sausage, juice and other beverages, pastries and fruit. The breakfast is free and open to the public. No reservations are required. For information, call 802-254-9767.
After a summer hiatus, the church’s Handbell Choir, the West Bee Belles, gets under way this week, under the direction of Alice McClellan. The choir will be practicing fall and Christmas music. New ringers and substitutes are needed. If interested, stop by at the rehearsal on Thursday evening at 7.
The church is busy with a new venture, Mary’s Closet, a thrift store with clothing for men, women, and children. There will be a rummage sale on Saturday, Sept. 22, from 9 a.m. to noon. Summer and fall clothing are needed and can be left downstairs during the coming week.
