BRATTLEBORO -- Centre Congregational Church in downtown Brattleboro will meet at 10 a.m. for worship on Sunday, Sept. 16, when the Rev. Carra McFadden continues her five-part sermon series with a sermon titled "Passionate Worship," based on the book "Five Practices of Fruitful Congregations" by Richard Schnase. The Scripture text is John 4:7-30. The Chancel Choir will participate under the direction of Director of Music Christian Huebner.
This year’s teachers and aides will be dedicated, then the children and middle schoolers are excused to meet in their club rooms where the theme "Getting to Know You" continues with a colorful art project, a Bible story and songs with Michael Mario, new director of Christian Education. Prior to worship at 9:35 a.m. the children and families will meet in the chapel for a song, prayer and offering. Fellowship Hour follows worship in the parlor. All are welcome.
Bins are in the hallway to collect winter clothing for those in need for the Brattleboro Area Drop-In Center for the Warm Hands, Warm Hearts project.
A new book discussion group will start meeting weekly at 6:30 p.m. Monday, Sept. 17, at the home of Paul Moberly, 25 Willow St., in Brattleboro. All those in their 20s and 30s (the age range is flexible) are invited to join. The focus for eight weeks will be on Rob Bell’s controversial and provocative book "Love Wins: A Book About Heaven, Hell, and the Fate of Every Person Who Ever Lived," a treatise on universal salvation. If interested, contact Paul Moberly at firstname.lastname@example.org or by phone at 331-425-2447.
A Wednesday evening Bible Study will take place at 7 at the home of Gisela Robeck, 63 Green Meadow, West Brattleboro. This week the focus is on "Intentional Faith Development," the third chapter of "Five Practices of Fruitful Congregations." Read scripture text: Acts 2: 37-42. Books are available to borrow and read and to have your name entered in a drawing for a "fruitful" gift on Oct. 7.
The fall jumble sale will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 21, and from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 22, in Memorial Hall.
