WEST BRATTLEBORO -- Dec. 16 is the Third Sunday of Advent at First Congregational Church, United Church of Christ, 880 Western Ave. in West Brattleboro. The Rev. Joe Amico’s sermon is "Shout Aloud and Sing For Joy" based on Zephaniah 3:14-20.

The worship begins with three Christmas songs played by the Handbell Choir, under the direction of Alice McClellan. The Handbells will also ring three more carols throughout the service. The Advent Candle of Joy will be lit. Organist William McKim will play the church’s 111-year-old tracker pipe organ. The prelude will be "Come, Savior of the Nations" by Pachelbel and postlude "Magnificat" by Dupre. Under the direction of Steve Rice, the Senior Choir will sing "I Hear the Prophet Callin’" by Choplin. Congregational hymns include "Break Forth O Beauteous Heavenly Light," "Lift Up Your Heads, O Mighty Gates" and "We Hail You, God’s Anointed."

Sunday worship at First Congregational Church is at 10 a.m. There is Sunday School during the worship hour for pre-school through grade 6, and child care for younger children. Following worship there is a Fellowship Hour in the Fireplace Room. For those with disabilities, there is a ramp leading to the sanctuary and Fireplace Room level, as well as large-print hymnals and bulletins. For a ride to worship call 802-257-4408.

Mary’s Closet, the church’s thrift shop with winter clothes for men, women and children, will be open on Saturdays, Dec. 15 and 29, from 9 a.m. to noon.

A Christmas Eve Candlelight Service will be held on Monday, Dec. 24, at 7 p.m. The service will include The Christmas Story in Scripture and Carols with special music by the senior choir, under the direction of William McKim and the Christmas Band, under the direction of Steve Rice, will play a selection of carols.
