DUMMERSTON -- Worship at Dummerston Congregational Church continues a sermon series on the Seven Last Words of Jesus from the Cross on Sunday, March 3, at 10 a.m. This week the primary scripture is John 19:19-27. The sermon is "Woman behold your son ... Son, behold your mother." The liturgy is largely taken from A Book of Worship for Free Churches; prepared for the Congregational Christian Churches in 1948.
Guest musicians Tim and Margaret Fogg will help lead the worship service. The choir, led by Rev. Dr. Larrimore Crockett, will sing.
This is a communion Sunday and the Special Offering will go to One Great Hour of Sharing, the national UCC offering for disaster and relief ministries here and around the world. UCC Disaster Ministries has just awarded a further $3,000 from OGHS for continuing operational costs of the South Eastern Vermont Long-Term Recovery Committee toward continuing Windham County recovery efforts. This is in addition to thousands of dollars given from OGHS to Vermont last year. OGHS has provided hundreds of clean-up suits and protective gear so volunteers were safe. They gave thousands of dollars to help Vermont relief, an provided $7,000 for a tool trailer to supply the volunteers who are still at work helping to re-build homes and lives. Checks may be written to DCC and marked OGHS.
The children continue a Lenten series on The Parables of Jesus. This week the story is Communion: A Living Parable from Luke 22: 7-20. Children begin in worship and then go to an open classroom, where they will continue their work on the Lord’s Prayer and learning about Kenya.
This week, children rejoin their parents for communion, which they may receive at the discretion of their parents. The children are taking an offering of redeemable bottles each week. People may bring their bottles to the church on Sunday, or drop them at the Redemption Center on Putney Road, behind Windham Veterinary Clinic. Just say they are for Dummerston Congregational Church and the church school will be credited. Money raised will go to provide uniforms, shoes and sweaters to children at an AIDS Orphanage in Kaiguchu, Kenya.
A Community Potluck Dinner and Games Night will be held on Friday, March 8, from 6 to 8 p.m. Bring a dish to share, a favorite game or puzzle and come enjoy getting to know your neighbors.
Non-perishable foods, toiletries, household item, blankets, tents and tarps for the Drop-In Center may be left in the church entry.
A Contemplative Prayer Service is held in the sanctuary each Wednesday from 6 to 7 p.m. Dress warmly and come for a time of shared silence and deep peace.
On Sunday, March 17, at 5 p.m. there will be a Taizé service. This Lenten service of meditation features Taizé chants, beautiful 4-part a cappella songs which are repeated over and over again. They have their origin in an ecumenical community in France and have become extremely popular in churches all over the world. The service will consist primarily of chants, periods of silence and simple prayers. Candlelight will add to the ambiance of peaceful meditation. Those wishing to learn the chants will gather downstairs at 4 p.m. to rehearse. The service will be prepared and led by Rev. Crockett.
The church is located in Dummerston Center, 1536 Middle Road, Dummerston. Dummerston Congregational Church UCC is a Green Justice Congregation of The United Church of Christ. Because the church is on the top of a mountain, worship and programs are canceled when driving is treacherous. If worship is canceled, all events for that day are canceled.
