GUILFORD -- "Who Was Jesus?" is the challenge of the day on Sunday, Oct. 20, at Guilford Community Church, United Church of Christ. After the 10 a.m. worship those interested will meet with the Rev. Phillip Dana Wilson and ponder just this question. First offering historical and theological insights, he will then open the group gathered for questions and discussion. This is part of the fall "Challenge to Faith" series highlighting central concepts to Christian faith.
Rev. Wilson is the retired rector of the Church of the Redeemer, Morristown, N.J. Redeemer adopted a vision of "liberation" as the work of God in its midst and styles itself a Christian Liberation Community in the Episcopal Tradition. The parish honors its Christian roots, but at the same time is clear that God is not a Christian, nor was Jesus. Wilson’s experience there will form the basis for his thoughts on views of Christ. Soup will be served.
The worship Sunday will include Pastor Lise Sparrow’s reflections on Luke 17: 11-19 in which Jesus heals the 10 lepers. Anthems will be "The Lord Is My Rock" and "Jesus Gave Me Water" under the direction of Tony Barrand. The children will complete a mural of animals and the ark and prepare a puppet show for next Sunday’s service. The teens will examine the rich diversity of creation during a hike up Wantastiquet Mountain in Hinsdale, N.H. Everyone is welcome.
Guilford Community Church is an Open and Affirming Congregation of the United Church of Christ and is fully handicapped accessible and committed to providing ASL interpreter and hearing assistance, if given notice of interest ahead.
The church is located one mile south of exit 1 on Route 5 just in back of the Guilford Country Store. For more information call 802-257-2776 or check the website at www.guilfordchurch.org.
