NEWFANE -- The Sacrament of Communion will be celebrated at the First Congregational Church of Newfane on Sunday, Jan. 5, at 10 a.m. with the Rev. Ivy Merrill as guest pastor. Rev. Merrill’s meditation is titled "In the Light" with scripture from the Gospel of Matthew, chapter 2, verses 1-12.

Congregational hymns are "As With Gladness," "We Three Kings of Orient Are" and "Shine, Jesus, Shine." The choir will sing the offertory "Bread of the World, in Mercy Broken" by Reginald Heber. Martha LaMoria, organist/music director, will play the prelude, "Prayer from Hansel and Gretel" by Englebert Humperdink and arranged by Edward Broughton, and the postlude "Celebration" by Robert J. Hughes. Sunday School for the children will begin at 10:15 following the children’s time during worship.

Events for the week include Al-Anon at 7:30 p.m. on Monday; Sew What’s at 5 p.m. on Tuesday; Deacons, Trustees and Council meetings on Wednesday; Monthly Senior Luncheon at noon on Thursday (meatloaf, baked potato, etc.), Hand Bell rehearsal at 5 p.m. on Thursday. For the months of January and February the church choir will be rehearsing at 8:45 on Sunday mornings with no Thursday evening rehearsals.

Newfane Church is handicap accessible by both stair lift and elevator and all are welcome. Office hours for the church are Monday, Wednesday and Thursday from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. and Tuesday from 10:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.
