DUMMERSTON -- Worship at Dummerston Congregational Church continues a sermon series on "The Book of Signs" in the Gospel of John, times when the holy broke into the ordinary. This week the scripture is John 5: 1-18, a healing story that turns into a controversy. The sermon is "That Difficult Question," from the verse, "Do you want to be made well?" The liturgy will include quotes from the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King. Music leadership will be provided by Franz Robert, organist and the Rev. Dr. Larrimore Crockett, choir director.
The choir will sing "Wade in the Water," a Traditional Spiritual arranged by Jimmie Abbington and "Lift Every Voice and Sing" by James Weldon Johnson and J. Rosamond Johnson.
The children begin a focus on "Children in the Bible" beginning with the Baby Moses. Children begin in worship and then go to the church school program, under the direction of Billie Slade, Church School Coordinator. There will be Bible study after worship on the scripture for Feb. 2, John 6: 1-15, "Feeding the Multitudes."
There will be a potluck and games night on Saturday, Jan. 31, from 6 to 8. Hot dogs and fixings will be provided. All are invited to bring a salad, side dish or dessert to share and a favorite game or puzzle.
Non-perishable foods, toiletries, household items, blankets, tents and tarps for the Drop-In Center may be left in the church entry.
On Feb. 2, the church will participate in "Souper Bowl" Sunday to raise funds and food for local soup kitchens. Bring low-sodium or favorite soups to donate and a pot-ready addition to our soup pot for soup at coffee hour. The church serves the meal at the Overflow Shelter on Tuesday, Jan. 21.
Worship is at 10 a.m. January through March. The church is located in Dummerston Center, 1536 Middle Road, Dummerston. Dummerston Congregational Church UCC is a Green Justice Congregation of The United Church of Christ.
Because the church is on a mountain, worship and programs are canceled when driving is treacherous. If worship is canceled, all events for that day are canceled. Check for cancellations at www.WTSA.net or www.WKVT.com, or contact the church to be added to a calling tree.
