NEWFANE -- Martin Luther King Weekend will be observed at the First Congregational Church of Newfane at the 10 a.m. worship service on Sunday, Jan. 19. The Rev. Dr. Chris Petrak will bring the meditation "The Creation" by James Weldon Johnson with scripture from Genesis 1:1-2:1-7.

The congregation will join in singing "There Is a Balm in Gilead," "Kum Ba Yah," "He’s Got the Whole World" and "Lord, I Want to Be a Christian." Special music will be provided by Deb Cook singing "My Lord! What a Morning," Bill Berner and David Roberts singing "Swing Low, Sweet Chariot" and the choir singing "Every Time I Feel the Spirit."

The choir will sing a spiritual "Amen" as the benediction. Martha LaMoria, music director, will play the prelude "Shall We Gather at the River" by Hugh S. Livingston Jr. based on the tune by Robert Lowry, and the postlude "The Gospel Trumpet" arranged by Benton Price based on an early American hymn tune. Sunday School for children begins at 10:15 am.

Events for the upcoming week include Al-Anon at 7:30 p.m. on Monday; Linus Quilters at 1 p.m. Tuesday; Ladies’ Aid at 10 a.m. and Hand Bell Rehearsal at 5 p.m. on Thursday; Newfane Neighborhood Night from 4 to 6 p.m. on Friday. Next Sunday, the Rev. Robert Hamm will return to lead worship. Heidi Carrington Heath of the West Dover Church and Andover Newton Theological School will bring a message about Andover Newton which is the focus of the church’s Mission of the Month.
