GUILFORD -- A Service of Remembrance has long been planned at Guilford Community Church, United Church of Christ, for Sunday, Feb. 2. It is the Feast of Candlemas and honors the moment Simeon and Anna recognize Jesus as the Messiah they have longed to meet.
In this same light, the congregation will honor loved ones who have passed on their love and wisdom to us with candles and candle-lighting.
That Pete Seeger passed on this week has only increased the desire to celebrate those who have had an impact on our lives. Seeger was a friend and beloved teacher to many members of the congregation and especially to the GCC choirmasters: Peter Amidon, Andy Davis and Tony Barrand and, with this in mind, Davis and the choir will sing three of his original compositions: "Sailing Down My Golden River" and "Had I a Golden Thread" and "May You Always Have Sunshine."
In his spirit two other anthems, "Candelmas Eve" and "Croatian Lullaby," will lift up his ability to embrace traditions of many cultures just as they highlight the balance in the seasons between the solstice and the equinox and our own balancing of faith with perseverance through hard times. Pastor Lise Sparrow will reflect on the idea of legacy and remembrance, highlighting the beatitudes found in Matthew 5 and admonitions from Colossians 3.
Children through the 8th grade will be involved in the candle lighting and remembrance and then enjoy related activities during Sunday School. Sunday School collections this month go to purchase uniforms for children in Kenya who have been orphaned by HIV/AIDS. At 2 p.m. the junior youth group will meet to plan the upcoming trip to Fossil Rim, a wildlife refuge in Glen Rose, Texas. All middle-schoolers are welcome.
