WESTMINSTER -- A year ago, Terriers baseball coach Bob Lockerby was worried that there wasn’t going to be enough players to fill positions on his varsity team in 2014. Lockerby’s worries were quickly erased when he saw 27 BFUHS kids try out.
"It’s an issue I see at other schools," he said. "We didn’t have that problem this time."
A large group of mostly juniors will be returning to the Bellows Falls team, and only one senior, Kyle O’Rourke, who pitched last season, will help cover the outfield. Juniors include Carson Fullam (CF), Austin Stack (P, SS), and Colby Howe (P, 1B), while the versatile Zack Streeter will be the only sophomore to play for the Terriers.
Bellows Falls wrapped up their 2013 season with a 9-8 record after falling to Fair Haven in a Division 2 playdown. Hurler Mike LaBeau won eight of those contests as a senior. Now it’s time for some new blood up on the mound.
The BF bullpen will include Fullam, who will also play the outfield with Reed Coursen, Stack, who will also help cover short stop, and Howe, who had arm problems last year, is looking really good, according to Lockerby. So are teammates Brendan Kelly, and lefty Chris Armstrong. Ethan Illingworth will likely be catching in the opener. Alex Groenewold will be at second base. Lockerby sees a lot options.
"I think the younger guys are ready to step up," said Lockerby. "We are really excited about our pitching."
Leading off for BF might be Stack, but Lockerby said the team hasn’t done much bat swinging due to the conditions of the field at BFUHS.
The Terriers’ opener was originally scheduled for Tuesday, April 8, but Lockerby said there are no promises. He said it’s more likely the opener will take place on Friday, April 11 at Otter Valley.

Track stars look to repeat
