BRANDON -- The Colonels boys lacrosse team scored their first victory of the season on Thursday, beating Marble Valley League opponent Otter Valley, 28-4.
The Colonels scored seconds into the game as Cesar Borges converted his opening face-off win and groundball into a goal. Brattleboro scored ten more goals in the opening twelve minutes to take an 11-0 lead into a more competitive second.
Otter Valley found the back of the net four times in that quarter, with the fourth goal trimming the lead to 12-4. The Colonels, however, did recover to score the final five goals of the half before adding six in the third and five in the fourth, to close out the game.
Brennen Zolnoski (6 goals, 1 assist), Sam Siegel (4 goals, 1 assist) and Tanner Freeman (2 goals, 2 assists) led the attack. Jake Atomanuk (4 goals), Evan Perkins (1 goal, 2 assists) and Liam Perra (1 goal, 3 assists) scored their first career varsity points.
From his midfield position, Jack Gagnon (2 goals, 1 assist) helped the Colonels get off to a quick start and Borges (2 goals), Robyn Avery (2 assists), Iziah Cliché (1 goal), Johnny Curtis (1 goal, 2 assists), and Perry Legg (3 goals) all scored their first varsity career points.
Bryce Fletcher, after making two saves in the first half, moved from the goal in the second until Ian Cebek took over.
"We started the game off fast and established ourselves early," said BUHS coach Chris Sawyer. "In the second quarter we had some defensive breakdowns and were a bit stagnant offensively but played a stronger second. We're inexperienced and still have many fundamental skills to acquire, but the boys played hard and with enthusiasm. It's nice that a lot of players were able to get in and out of the game and contribute in a team win."
The 1-1 Colonels are off until next Thursday, April 24, when they host Amherst, MA at 7 on Natowich Field.
