WOODSTOCK -- Kaylea Niles and Abby Putnam each went 3-for-4 to help the Twin Valley softball team past Woodstock, 17-10, in the season opener.

Savannah Nesbitt contributed with a two-run homer, Jordan Niles had two hits, and Colton Butler had an RBI for the 1-0 Wildcats. Kaylea Niles, Nesbitt and Putnam teamed up to drive in six runs.

Putnam and Jordan Niles took turns in the circle. Niles pitched very well in relief, according to Twin Valley coach Aaron Wood.

Leland & Gray 6, Rutland 1

RUTLAND -- Elizabeth Symanski (8 K’s, 0 BB) fired a four-hitter to get the win and also went 2-for-4 at the dish.

Emily Stockwell had three hits, including a double and a triple, to lead the Rebels’ attack. Leah Gokey and Emily Thibault each drove in one run, while catcher Elizabeth Gallup gunned down a couple of potential base thieves to lead the defense.

The 1-0 Rebels will play at Springfield on Thursday at 4:30 p.m.

Vermont Olympians

Today at 2 p.m. at the Vermont State House in Montpelier, the Vermont General Assembly will recognize the achievements of Vermont Olympians on the state house floor with a resolution ceremony and presentation of medallions created by Simon Pearce.

The Olympians will then meet with Governor Peter Shumlin, and members of the legislature who wish to thank and honor them for their dedication to athleticism, and their representation of Vermont and the United States in the 2014 Sochi Olympics.

Athletes in attendance will include Hannah Kearney, Ida Sargent, Susan Dunklee, Sophie Caldwell, and Liz Stephen. Another 14 athletes not in attendance will also be honored, including medalists Mikaela Shiffrin, Twin Valley High School graduate Devin Logan, West Dover’s Kelly Clark, Alex Deibold, and Nick Goepper.

College News

Brattleboro Union High School graduate Kyle Whitworth is a senior catcher on the Lyndon State College baseball team.

The Hornets are 8-10 overall heading into today’s doubleheader against Colby-Sawyer that will take place in Lyndonville, with the games starting at 2 p.m. and 4:30 p.m.

Whitworth has 13 hits in 47 at bats for a .277 average. He has scored nine runs, has one RBI and has stolen 11 bases.
