BRATTLEBORO -- BUHS athletes are approaching the midway point of the spring season. The following is a re-cap of each team’s progress thus far:

Softball

The Division 1 defending champion Colonels softball team maintain the best record at 4-2. Coach Kelly Markol’s girls got hot early season victories against Otter Valley and Rutland, holding either team to only a run. Drury handed them their first loss in a close contest, but they quickly bounced back with lopsided wins over Mill River and SJA. Wahconah beat Brattleboro by a significant margin in the crew’s second loss.

Boys Lacrosse

Head coach Chris Sawyer’s lacrosse squad improved to 3-1 with their 16-2 win versus Spaulding over the weekend. Brattleboro began their season with a loss to Northampton but turned things around, hammering Otter Valley, 28-4, then taking care of Amherst, 15-10.

Baseball

The Colonels baseball team (2-3) took their licks early on but continue to improve following back-to-back wins versus SJA and Bellows Falls. Hartford and Drury downed coach Chris Groeger’s gang in their first two games, and Rutland barely got past them in a 15-14 thriller.

Girls Lacrosse

Shannon Garrett, in her first year as head coach of girls LAX, led the team to their first victory over Spaulding, 11-9, on Saturday to go 1-1. The purple and white fell to Northampton, 16-5, in their opener.

Tennis

Both the boys and girls tennis teams are looking for their first wins of their respective seasons. Coach Justin Duncan’s lads (0-4) got blanked by Bellows Falls, Rutland, and Burr and Burton, and were miffed after a 5-2 loss to MAU. The girls, coached by Tom Weber, were also dealt L’s by Rutland, BBA, and MAU, while Springfield got a 6-1 victory over BUHS in their second matchup.

Track

The Brattleboro boys and girls track teams both placed second in their opening meet held in Bennington, then took gold at their next meet held on Earth Day beating out Bellows Falls, Woodstock, Hartford, Sharon, Twin Valley, and Springfield. First-year coach Dan Barile heads up the team.
