BRATTLEBORO -- The Brattleboro Union High School boys lacrosse team defeated rival MAU, 10-8, in Friday night's game at Natowich Field.

The Colonels got on the board first when Tanner Freeman (4 goals, 1 assist) scored one minute into the contest. The Patriots rebounded to hold leads of 2-1, 3-2 and 4-3 before two Colonel goals prior to the half gave the home team a 5-4 lead at the break.

MAU quickly tied the game early in the third quarter and held the Colonels scoreless for the first seven minutes of the half before Brattleboro got on top for good. With the score deadlocked, midfielder Iziah Cliche's hustle play on a ground ball gave the Colonels an important possession and ignited the team to four unanswered goals. Up 9-5 midway through the fourth quarter, things did get tight with the Patriots cutting the lead to one with four minutes to play but a potential tying shot was stoned by BUHS goalie Ian Cebek and the Colonels added one before running out the clock.

In addition to Freeman's four goals and Jack Gagnon's goal, Brennen Zolnoski added two with an assist, and Conner Elliott-Knaggs, Sam Siegel and Evan Perkins added single goals. Perkins, Colby McGinn and Robyn Avery had assists.

Brattleboro closed the season at 12-4 and will be seeded 4th in the upcoming state tournament -- most likely playing a very talented Middlebury team that is regarded as one of the state's best.

"We'll have our work cut out for us if we face Middlebury but for us, the big thing is we get to spend more time with a great group of seniors. These guys have been such a big part of our success over the past few years but more than being good lacrosse players they are just super kids," said Colonels coach Chris Sawyer.

Seniors Cesar Borges, Conner Elliott-Knaggs, Bryce Fletcher, Colby McGinn, Kyle Patno, Sam Siegel and Vijay Woodworth played their last regular-season game on Natowich Field on Friday night.
