BRATTLEBORO -- The Bill Powers Memorial Firecracker 4-Miler road race will begin at Living Memorial Park in Brattleboro on Friday, July 4, at 9:30 a.m.
Each mile is marked for the race that travels through downtown Brattleboro and ends at the town common. There is one water station at Mile 2. Water and light refreshments will be provided at the finish. There will be prizes for the male and female overall winners and the winner of each age group.
Registration will be held at Living Memorial Park from 8 a.m. to 9:15 a.m. on race day.
The last nine winners of this race were: 2005 -- Jordan Peoples, 21:48; 2006 -- Jordan Peoples, 21:09; 2007 -- Topher Sabot, 22:33; 2008 -- Jordan Peoples, 21:59; 2009 -- Jason Dunklee, 23:11; 2010 -- Robert Lind, 22:12; 2011 -- Jason Porter, 22:30; 2012 -- Jason Porter, 22:13; 2013 -- Rob Lind, 22:22.
The first female finisher the last nine races were: 2005 -- Suzy West, 7th overall, 24:57; 2006 -- Madeline Davis Hayes, 7th overall, 25:35; 2007 -- Tammy Richards, 5th overall, 24:03; 2008 -- Heather Conarroe, 11th overall, 25:50; 2009 -- Suzy West, 13th overall, 26:17; 2010 -- Julianne Eagan, 21st overall, 30:09; 2011 -- Heather Conarroe, 7th overall, 25:03; 2012 -- Heather Conarroe, 15th overall, 26:04; 2013 -- Tammy Richards, 4th overall, 25:09.
Catamount Half Marathon
BRATTLEBORO -- Kurt Hackler of Alstead, N.H. won Sunday’s half marathon in Brattleboro 1:17:24. Anna Novick, of Japan, was fourth overall and the first female finisher in 1:30:25.
Dana McClelland of Vernon placed fifth in 1:31:13 and was the top local finisher.
Also in the Top 30 were: Tammy Richards of Williamsville in 6th, David Hiler of Brattleboro in 8th, Jeffrey Riley of Newfane in 9th, Evan Chadwick of Brattleboro in 20th, Evan Lincoln of Dummerston in 27th, and Danielle Southwell of Brattleboro in 29th.
GUILFORD -- Matt Mann of Brattleboro took Saturday’s Guilford Road Race and Fun Run in a time of 19:57.
Rounding out the top five were: William Colvin of Bennington, Aaron Skutch of Pennsylvania, Isaac Frietas-Eagan of Guilford, and Bennington’s Jessica Chapman, who was the first female finisher in 23:22.

SAXTONS RIVER -- The Walpole Maples defeated the Saxtons River Pirates, 4-2, on Tuesday at Vermont Academy.
Jamie Spence had a pair of hits to pace the Pirates. Jeremy Gilcris, Adam Kuhn and Alex Drost took turns on the hill for the hosts.
The Pirates will play a home game on Friday at 1:15 p.m. and then host games on Saturday and Sunday at noon.
