WAITSFIELD -- The Brattleboro 11-year-old All Stars ended their season in Waitsfield on Thursday, one win short of the State Championship, as they were defeated by Mad River Little League, 12-2.
After a promising start and a 2-0 lead, the wheels came off for Brattleboro. Three second-inning errors along with five walks sent Mad River on their way to the victory and Brattleboro never recovered.
Brattleboro struck for a run in the first on a Henry Thurber hit, but lost a chance for a bigger inning when he was thrown out at the plate. In the second, Rachael Rooney's solid base hit up the middle brought home Nick Bingham and Brattleboro seemed on their way.
However, with one out in the bottom of the second, Mad River became the beneficiary of a complete Brattleboro melt-down. After the dust had cleared, Mad River led 6-2 without the benefit of a hit. A couple more Brattleboro misplays and Mad River hits helped pad the score before Dustin Kingsbury doubled down the line in the fourth inning to score the 12th run ending the game and giving Mad River the State Championship.
The Brattleboro team was made up of Nick Bingham, Shea Buckley, Greg Fitzgerald, Ryan Gerard, Alex Kendall, Nico Hessel, Spencer Lawrence, Rachael Rooney, Gavin Seppala, Liam Styles, Henry Thurber and Trinley Warren. Coaches were Tim Rooney, Ed Kendall, Mike Bingham and Manager Jim Waters.
