THETFORD -- Becca Freeman finished second in 25:04 to lead the Brattleboro Union High School cross country team in its season opener on Tuesday.
"The weather was very hot and humid and made the running of the hilly 3.1 mile course fairly difficult," said Colonels coach John Dimick.
The Brattleboro girls placed third with 58 points. Woodstock prevailed with 21 points and host Thetford (57) took the silver.
Freeman was the first of five finishers for the purple and white. Caty Yost took sixth in 27:18, Dana Alexa was 20th in 32:34, Emily Gale wound up 22nd in 33:38, and Katie Reynolds ended up 24th in 34:45.
The order of finish in the boys team race went like this: 1st)Woodstock, 2nd)Thetford, 3rd)Bellows Falls, 4th)Rivendell, 5th)Brattleboro.
Ryan Gilligan placed sixth overall in 19:52 to lead the Colonels. Also competing for Brattleboro were: Tyler Clement, 15th, 22:26; Josh Meachen, 25th, 24:24; Phelan Muller, 27th, 24:50; Rhys Glennon, 28th, 24:52; Devin Rinaldi, 29th, 25:37; and Garrett Winchester, 34th, 28:56.

BENNINGTON -- The Patriots built a 3-0 lead in the first 10 minutes and coasted to an easy victory on Tuesday.
Margaret Curtin and Kori Bow each tallied twice for the winners. Sam Cross and Lizzie Potter each scored one goal.
The 0-1-1 Colonels will host Rutland tonight at 7.
St. Johnsbury 5, Brattleboro 1
"It was a great game and a learning experience (playing against a good team)," said BUHS coach Paul Sather.
The 0-1 Colonels will host Proctor on Saturday at 11 a.m.
Hinsdale 5, Farmington 0
FARMINGTON, N.H. -- Kathryn Fecto tallied twice on Wednesday to help the Pacers even their record at 1-1.
Jacqueline Atkins, Megan Finnell and Jen Matuszewski also scored for Hinsdale. Kyra Rideout made two saves to get the shutout and Emily Ricker played well at stopper.
The Pacers will play at Conant on Friday.
