BRATTLEBORO -- Throughout the 2011-12 school year, Karli Knapp, a Wardsboro resident and a 10th grader at Leland and Gray Union High School, has been a member of and competing in the New York State High School Rodeo Association which is part of the National High School Rodeo Association.
As a second year member, Knapp competes in Barrel Racing, Pole Bending, Goat Tying and Breakaway Roping. She uses her horse Shelby and her aunt’s horse Hank for these events.
This year, she competed in the Rodeo Queen contest. There were many parts to this competition which required the contestants to take a written test, do a personal interview, perform a horsemanship pattern, model a western style dress and give a two-minute speech as well as an impromptu speech. All of which took lots of time and hard work.
Her good friend, Alyssa Volkmer, was crowned Rodeo Queen and Knapp was First Runner Up. Both girls support each other and have fun doing what they love.
The members compete for points throughout the season and the top four competitors in each event at the end of the season qualify to go to "Nationals" which is held in Rock Springs, Wyoming.
