BRATTLEBORO -- Brattleboro Union High School senior Jacob Ellis was named the 2011-12 Gatorade Vermont Boys Track & Field Athlete of the Year. He is the first BUHS boy to ever receive this honor.
The award, which recognizes outstanding athletic excellence and high standards of academic achievement and exemplary character demonstrated on and off the track, distinguishes Ellis as Vermont’s best high school boys track & field athlete. He is now a finalist for the prestigious Gatorade National Boys Track & Field Athlete of the Year.
The 6-1, 145-pounder won the 1500-meter run at the Division 1 state meet this spring with a state-record time of 3:57.33, which ranked No. 24 nationally among prep competitors in 2012 at the time of selection. Ellis also won the 800-meter run in 1:59.05 and placed fifth in the 200-meter dash in 23.64, leading the Colonels to a fifth-place finish as a team. Also a state-record holder in the 800 (1:54.01), he concluded his prep track career with seven state titles.
Ellis has maintained an A average in the classroom. An accomplished trumpet player and singer, he has participated in numerous shows with the New England Youth Theater company and volunteered locally as a middle school track official.

Ellis will attend Bowdoin College in Brunswick, Maine, where he wil compete with the track & field team.
He joins recent Gatorade Vermont Boys Track & Field Athletes of the Year Mike DiMambro (2009-10 and 1010-11) of Essex, Adron Pitmon (2008-09) of Mount Mansfield and Ken Bunnell (2007-08) of St. Johnsbury Academy.
Here are Jacob’s highlights from this year’s track & field season:
May 5 -- Ellis won the 1500 in 4:04.39 to break the meet record at the 40th Burlington Invitational and won the 800 in 1:59.02 to tie the meet record. He was named outstanding male athlete of the meet.
May 12 -- Ellis won the 1600 in 4:26.98 and the 800 in 1:55.93 at the Connecticut Valley conference finals. He ran a 49.5 anchor split for Brattleboro’s second place 4x400 relay team.
May 19 -- Ellis won the 400 at Hanover in 50.59, breaking the school record that was set in 1964.
May 26 -- Ellis won the 800 in 1:54.01 to break the Vermont State record on books since 2009. He ran a 49.2 split to anchor a third place 4x400 relay team.
June 2 -- Ellis won the 1500 in 3:57.33 to break the Vermont State record on the books since 1986. He also won the 800 in 1:59.05, placed fifth in the 200 in 23.64 and ran a 50.5 400 split to anchor fourth place 4x400 relay team.
June 9 -- Ellis placed second in the 800 by .09 seconds at the New England Championship at Thornton Academy in Saco, Maine.
Ellis will be receiving the 2012 Lt. Colonel Broutsas Award, presented for excellence in athletics. He has participated in the New England Championships all four years. He was also selected for the All Marble Valley League team in cross country all four years.
