BRATTLEBORO -- The Post 5 Legion baseball team split with Rutland in Sunday’s doubleheader, with a 6-4 loss in the opener and a 4-0 victory in Game 2.
"Thank God we got a split," said Brattleboro skipper Claude Gouin. "They (Rutland) are a good team. Not having Soren (Pelz-Walsh) really hurt us, but the kids stepped up and kept their heads in it."
Tommy Heydinger fired a three-hit shutout in the Post 5 win. All four of the runs came in the fifth frame.
"It was a great performance by Tommy," noted Gouin. "He kept them off balance with his curve."
Jamie Martell pounded out two hits to lead the Brattleboro attack. Evan Parro and Martell each drove in a run.
Post 5 stole a 3-0 lead in Game 1, but Rutland rallied in the fifth to take the lead for good. Drew Barnum (6 K’s, 5-hitter) suffered the loss.
Chris McAuliffe, Sawyer Olson and Brandon Reilly all had a pair of hits for Brattleboro in the opener. McAuliffe singled, homered and drove in three runs.
Post 5 (7-3) will host rival Bennington on Tuesday at 5:30 p.m.
