VASSALBORO, ME -- The final round of the New England Women’s Golf Association at Natanis Golf Club increased the pressure on everybody, Wednesday. The greens faster, the weather warmer, and the grass longer in the rough, it was the last day for competitors to make their moves.
Samantha Morrell, of Laurel Lane Country Club of MA, did just that, mounting a charge against Kristen MacDonald, of Thomson Country Club, CT, who had held the lead for two days straight. MacDonald, however, held off Morrell and won the tournament. MacDonald credited her consistency to her winning perfomance, beating Morrell by one stroke overall -- 222 vs. 223 through three days of play.
Pam Kuong, who plays out of Charles River Country Club, also in MA, took third place, with a 231, her score coming down each of the three days of play. Kuong was also the leading Senior finisher with that score, the next Senior some six strokes behind.
Nicole Tombs, of Concord Country Club in N.H., who led the Legends Division after yesterday’s round, stayed steady to keep the lead and win the Division.
Alice Huang, of Penobscot Valley Country Club of ME, won the Junior Division, with a three-day total of 250. Huang pulled ahead of yesterday’s Junior pack by posting a 78 in today’s round.
Natanis Golf Club, in Vassalboro, ME, yielded only one below-par round in all three days of play, posted by MacDonald on the first day.
