BRATTLEBORO -- Practice for the Brattleboro Union High School fall cross country teams will begin on Monday, Aug. 20 at 9 a.m.
Students interested should meet at the BUHS track with athletic forms in hand. Practice will last until 11 a.m. All BUHS students are welcome to join the team.

BRATTLEBORO -- The Brattleboro Union High School field hockey tryouts will begin this week with practices on Thursday and Friday from 8 a.m. to Noon. The team will then compete in the Keene, N.H., jamboree on Saturday.
There will be a preseason soccer meeting for parents on Sunday, Aug. 19, at 6:30 p.m., in the BUHS multi-purpose room or on the Natowich Field bleachers, weather permitting.
Preseason tryouts for varsity and junior varsity girls soccer will begin on Monday, Aug. 20, with two sessions -- 7 to 9 a.m. for incoming freshman only and 5 to 7 p.m. for all grades. There will also be two sessions on Tuesday and Wednesday for all grades -- 7 to 9 a.m. and 5 to 7 p.m. On Thursday and Friday, there will be a 5 to 7 p.m. session.

Wiffleball benefit tourney nears goal
ESSEX -- The second
The 24-team backyard WIFFLE ball tourney brought home a record $427,000 (as of July 13, 2011), to benefit the foundation that benefits and creates awareness for people with spinal cord injuries. The fundraising total exceed last year’s record $407,000 and the 11-year tournament of roughly $1,926,000 is just $74,000 shy of the two million dollar mark.
The tournament, which raised $15,000 in its first two years, has now raised a staggering $1.2 million over the last three. Contributions will be accepted until Sept. 30 to attempt to reach the two million dollar level.
