ESSEX -- Joey Picard tossed five touchdown passes and ran for another to power the Essex football team past Brattleboro, 48-7, in Friday’s season-opener.
Tyler Higley fired a 30-yard TD strike to Josh LaValley in the second quarter for the only BUHS score. The Colonels trailed 35-7 at the half.
Brattleboro’s Elliot Gragen and Jake Gaboriault combined to rush for over 100 yards. Higley picked off two passes to lead the BUHS defense.
The 0-1 Colonels will host CVU on Friday at 7 p.m.
In other games on the gridiron: BFA-St. Albans outscored St. Johnsbury 26-6, Burr and Burton blitzed MAU 52-33, Hartford held off Colchester 13--7, Middlebury mauled Mount Mansfield 28-6, Otter Valley sunk Springfield 48-6, Rutland edged South Burlington 17-14, Spaulding denied North Country 28-16 and Woodstock whipped BFA-Fairfax 48-19.
Bellows Falls 20, Fair Haven 14
FAIR HAVEN -- Ethan Illingworth hooked up with Mike LaBeau for a 43-yard touchdown pass early in the fourth quarter to give the Terriers a victory over the defending Division 2 Champions.
The visitors took a 6-0 lead to the break after Carson Fullam’s three-yard sweep to paydirt and later added a two-yard sneak by Illingworth to increase the advantage.
Zach Rawling finished with 115 rushing yards on 25 carries for the winners.
The 1-0 Terriers will host RIce on Friday at 7 p.m.

HINSDALE, N.H. -- The visitors tallied 18 minutes into the second half to break a 1-1 tie and held on for the victory.
"It was a good game. We improved on our performance from the first game. We had a couple of chances to finish, but we weren’t able to put it in," said Pacers coach Drew Arsenault.
Trailing 1-0, Hinsdale’s Mackenzie Schultz deadlocked the game late in the opening half with an assist from Skylar Bonnette. Bridget Bourne finished with a dozen saves.
The 0-2 Pacers will play an away game on Wednesday.
Hockey sign-ups
SAXTONS RIVER -- The PVA sign-ups for the 2102-2013 hockey season will take place on Sunday, Sept. 30, at the Vermont Academy Ice
Rink, from 3-5 p.m., for ages 4-19. PVA plays hockey at Vermont Academy with practice two nights a week and games on weekends. The season starts at the end of October and runs through the end of February. Hockey equipment is supplied for ages 4-7 and there are equipment swaps and tradeups for all ages.
