BRATTLEBORO -- Only 13 players will make up the Brattleboro varsity field hockey team this year since 10 seniors graduated in 2011.

That doesn’t seem to concern Deb Valliere, the team’s coach. "We have some pretty strong athletes coming up," she said in a phone interview with the Reformer. "There are some incredibly strong forwards to look out for."

Forwards include Meghan Kinsman, Daija Germain, and Kebrina Howard. Assisting them out of the midfield includes players Kayla Savage, Daisy Giroux, and Becca Freeman.

"So far, the players have all demonstrated consistency at their individual positions," said Valliere, who also serves at the school as a guidance counselor. "Passing appears to be a big part of the game this year. What I like to tell my players: anybody can score. Even if you’re on defense, you have to constantly try to maintain control. Players have to be versatile enough to switch positions and know what to do."

Valliere said a group of juniors will make up the core of the Colonels as they look to their season opener at home Wednesday against Hartford at 7 p.m.

"It might be their first year, but many of the juniors seem to be picking up the game rather quickly," she said.
