BRATTLEBORO -- Rice is on the menu tonight in Bellows Falls. Call it a candlelight dinner.
After devouring defending State Champion Fair Haven, 20-14, in Week 1, the Terriers will play their first ever night game on Hadley Field against the Green Knights. Meanwhile, Brattleboro (0-1) will be hosting Champlain Valley Union (1-0) on Natowich Field.
Both of those contests will begin at 7 p.m. The Colonels will be broadcast live on 96.7 WTSA, with a tailgate party starting at 5 p.m. and the pre-game show set for 6:45 p.m.
BUHS will attempt to bounce back from a 48-7 blowout loss to Essex a week ago, when Tyler Higley’s 30-yard TD strike to Josh LaValley was the lone scoring play for the Colonels. Backfield mates Elliot Gragen and Jake Gaboriault did manage to rush for over 100 yards combined in that season-opener.
CVU is one of six teams with a 1-0 record in Division 1, thanks to their 31-13 rout of Burlington on Saturday. Quarterback Steele DuBrul ran for one touchdown and passed for another, while Pat Shea reached the house twice for the Red Hawks.
Up in Bellows Falls, it’s very likely that it will be the top two teams in Division 2 that are locking horns.
Rice got 164 all-purpose yards and two TD’s from Casey Tipson in their 40-0 drubbing of U-32 in Week 1. Charlie Boardman finished that game with 55 passing yards and a pair of scoring strikes.
And the Terriers have to be feeling
Another pay-per-view type of matchup in Week 2, is tonight’s St. Albans at Hartford showdown. Doug Saffo had TD carries of 53 and 55 yards in BFA’s 26-6 decision over St. Johnsbury, while the defending State Champs racked up 267 rushing yards -- by Joe Wood and Josh Clafin -- in a 13-7 victory over Colchester.
Middlebury will visit Essex tonight in another Division 1 battle of the unbeatens. And there are a couple of Heisman frontrunners to keep an eye on elsewhere -- Spaulding quarterback Jon Killian, who had four scores versus North Country last week, will face Colchester’s rugged defense on Saturday. And South Burlington signal caller Hunter Riehle, who threw for 278 yards and a couple of bombs against Rutland, will show off his arm in Bennington tonight.
