Font ResizeLUDLOW -- After two shutouts over the weekend, the Rebels have brought home the Josh Cole crown.
Coming off a 3-0 Friday night blowout against Black River, the Leland & Gray varsity boys soccer team kept the momentum going and trounced Green Mountain, 5-0, to win the annual tournament.
At Friday’s game Corey Nystrom scored two for the Rebels, the first at the 17:30 mark (assisted by Aiden Coleman), and a follow up goal 30 minutes into play.
The final make came from Jake Sherman in the second half at the 10-minute mark.
In the keeper’s box, Leland & Gray’s Tanner Karg had six saves. Sweeper Zach Wilkins and midfielder Mike Bergeron provided additional defensive assistance.
In game two, Sherman led the way with the Reb’s first goal.
"After about 20 minutes into the game, we didn’t allow them many chances to score," said Leland & Gray coach Chris Barton.
But the Rebels had plenty of chances and took advantage of them. Nystrom, Wilkins, Tyler Scott, and Bruno Posa each had a goal apiece to seal the deal.
Leland & Gray plays rivals Twin Valley today at 7 p.m.
Boys Soccer
Black River 7, Bellows Falls 1
LUDLOW -- The Bellows Falls varsity boys soccer team lost to Black River, Saturday in the second round of the Josh Cole Tournament.
Liam Shaw picked up the sole goal for the Terriers.

Girls Soccer
Brattleboro 8, Mill River 1
NORTH CLARENDON -- Halie Lange made a hat trick, Biak Chia Tial put in two, and Truuske Bailey-de Brujin, Libby Annis, and Maddie Rollins each scored a goal apiece Saturday to give the Brattleboro varsity girls soccer team a victory over Mill River.
"They (Mill River) had a nice big field, so we had all the speed we needed," said Colonel coach Edwin de Brujin.
Brattleboro relied heavily on its wings to stretch the Mill River defense, and within three minutes of play, the Colonels were up 1-0.
Mill River tied it at the 5:00 mark, but within 20 minutes of their opponent’s drive, Brattleboro added another four goals, making it 5-1 at the half.
"At that point, we took the foot off the pedal a bit," said de Brujin. "But then in the last 10 minutes, we stepped it up again and kept on scoring."
Cross Country
LANGDON -- The Hinsdale harriers competed at Fall Mountain on Friday, with the Pacer girls edging Fall Mountain 27-29 and the Hinsdale boys losing to the hosts 17-46.
Hinsdale’s Roxy Toussaint won the girl’s race in 23:33. Sonja Hansson of Fall Mountain came in second in 26:55. Starr Bruce finished sixth overall for the Pacers in 27:46. Katelyn Towle, Kristina Marsh and Taryn Fisk rounded out Hinsdale’s top five, coming in seventh, eighth and ninth respectively.
The boy’s race was won by Levi Frye of Fall Mountain in 17:57. The Wildcats took the top three places before Hinsdale’s Tanner Nichols finished in fourth place with a time of 19:26. Evan Dunkley and Daniel Bruce finished in 10th and 11th place. Florin Handelman finished in 18th and Sam Calderwood finished in 27th for Hinsdale.
"The summer-like weather made race conditions tough today. It was great getting an individual win with Roxy, and team win with the girls, and I was pleased with the way the boys battled Fall Mountain," said Hinsdale coach Glenn Hammett.
The Pacers will be back in action on Saturday at the Manchester Invitational.

BRATTLEBORO -- In recent Connecticut River Valley Soccer League action, the U-12 Brattleboro Storm 1 played Mount Hermon to a 3-3 tie. River Defelice tallied twice and Malcolm Tolena also scored for the Vermonters.
Brattleboro Storm 2 outscored Shelburne Falls 4-2 and beat Mount Hermon 4-1. Gus Williams, Ilen Pandelaki, Ty Allenhart, Anthony Piergentilli, Delaney Bullock, Gavin Johnston, Colton Bills and Declan Lonergan all split the posts for the Storm.
