BRATTLEBORO -- They say it’s better to be lucky than to be good, but a couple of teams in the area are fortunate enough to be a combination of the two.
The Twin Valley boys soccer team is a perfect 4-0, with the latest victory coming on Nick Nilsen’s goal at the overtime buzzer. The Wildcats have outscored their first four foes by a combined 12-1, including a 3-1 victory over defending State Champion Proctor. Colin Lozito and Tony Tarr each have a two-goal game, while backup goalie Kyle Murdock has a pair of shutouts.
And the 3-0 Bellows Falls field hockey team opened up with a thrilling 1-0 victory over Woodstock, thanks to Mariah Barnett’s burial in overtime. And the Terriers haven’t given up a single goal this season, as they shut out St. Johnsbury and Burr and Burton in their last two contests.
Leland & Gray soccer goalie Tanner Karg blanked a pair of opponents to help the Rebels win the Josh Cole Tournament. And Twin Valley’s Sam Molner, who made his first start between the pipes on Wednesday, got the assist on Nilsen’s recent game winner -- netminders rarely get those.
Brattleboro’s Halie Lange has been the area’s offensive star on the pitch. She already has hat tricks against Stevens and Mill River, along with a game-winning tally versus Burr and Burton.
Jackson Batchelder has a couple of deciding winners for the BUHS boys soccer team.

On the gridiron, Brattleboro (0-3) and Bellows Falls (2-1) have both been playing difficult schedules in the early going. BUHS quarterback Tyler Higley threw three touchdowns in Friday’s 28-18 loss to Rutland, while the Terriers are coming off of a 51-44 shootout victory over Burr and Burton.
