TOWNSEND, Mass. -- Zeb Lesure had a pair of rushing touchdowns to help the Brattleboro Generals to a 21-0 victory over North County of Gardner, Mass., in Sunday’s Pop Warner Football League Division II Junior Midget Super Bowl at North Middlesex High School.
"Another tight game between North County and Brattleboro came down to turnovers, special teams execution, and emotional energy -- which Brattleboro had," said Generals head coach Michael Cersosimo, whose team had defeated North County 13-8 during the regular season.
In the rematch, three first-half turnovers by the Panthers led to a trio of touchdowns by Brattleboro. The Generals would take a 21-0 lead to the break.
The initial score came after a deep punt by Tony Martinez touched a North County player and was pounced on by Matt Gaboriault. Lesure then took a pitch from quarterback Tanner Bell, hit the sidelines, turned on the jets and rocketed down the field for a 39-yard TD. Lesure also ran in the extra point.
Cornerback Leif Bigelow set up the next touchdown by picking off a pass and returning the interception into North County territory. Fullback Treston Jordan would eventually pave the way for Lesure’s two-yard rumble into the end zone. Lesure would then make his first two-point kick of the year, following a great snap by Bell and hold from Martinez.
Outside linebacker Jacob Lyon’s sack would force the Panthers to punt, but they were unable to get the kick away and Brattleboro took over at the North County 20. Jordan would score from there, thanks to key blocks by Chayse Cunniff and Gaboriault.
The Generals’ defense shut down North County’s potent aerial assault, behind excellent pass coverage by Bigelow, Martinez, and Kyle Derosia and incredible pressure on the QB generated by Lyon, Cunniff, and Adam Curtis. Brattleboro’s run defense was keyed by Lesure, Jordan, Bell, Isaiah Gilbeau, Jordan Wright, Kris Carroll and Max Cobb.
The Generals’ offensive line was anchored at center by Tyler Godin and got great contributions by Brandon Barnard at guard and split end Tyler Germain. Previously injured players Danny Petrie and Jack Price led the cheers on the sideline and kept everyone motivated.
After Brattleboro jumped out to a 21-0 lead in the first half, North County regrouped at halftime and the second half was a hard-hitting stalemate.
This was a Super Bowl repeat for 15 of the Brattleboro players. Members of the Generals team are: Coaches -- Michael Cersosimo, Glen Lesure, Jim Gaboriault, John Lynde, Jim Derosia.
