BRATTLEBORO -- Brattleboro’s Nordic ski team called last season, "the winter that wasn’t."
But the Colonels were clearly referring to the lack of snow as opposed to a lack of success.
Halie Lange skied to a silver in the Classical portion and a gold in the Freestyle portion, helping the BUHS girls finish third in the Vermont State Championships. Emma Straus, Leah Silverman and Helen Manning completed the team’s Fab Four.
Bill Jahn’s 2012-13 group will debut at Prospect on Dec. 15 and then host a meet on Dec. 22 at 11 a.m.
It will be another successful girls squad in the area that will lead things off this winter, as the Hinsdale girls basketball team will host Concord Christian on Tuesday night at 7.
The Pacers are coming off of a 15-3 regular season, which was followed by victories in the prelims and quarterfinals. Backcourt mates Skylar Bonnette and Allison Scott were the February 2012 Reformer Athletes of the Month by averaging 29 points, nine assists and eight rebounds as a tandem.
Brattleboro’s boys basketball team, which went 13-7 last season, will open up at home versus Burr and Burton on Monday, Dec. 10, at 7:30 p.m. The Colonels eliminated rival MAU in round one and knocked out CVU in the quarterfinals last season, before T.J. Wesson’s miraculous shot at the end of regulation helped Mount Mansfield to a double overtime win over the Colonels in the semis.
Both of the Colonel hockey teams won 10 regular season contests last winter. They also advanced to the second round, thanks in part to Jimmy Podlaski’s hat trick and Emily Wilson’s four goals in the first-round games.
If Lange had the best season of any local female in the area last season, Nolan Viens likely gets that honor on the male side. The Bellows Falls/Hartford wrestler defeated Colchester’s Nick Eddy, 5-3, to win the New England wrestling championship in Providence, R.I.
The best regular-season performance probably came from Ashley Goddard, who racked up 18 points and 18 rebounds on Leland & Gray’s Senior Night. Her Rebels will welcome West Rutland on Monday, Dec. 10, at 7:30 p.m.
The Leland & Gray boys basketball team, which went 15-5 a season ago and earned the No. 3 seed in the tournament, will host Burr and Burton on Wednesday, Dec. 12, at 7:30 p.m.
And who doesn’t want to see Twin Valley floor general Colin Lozito in action? The playmaker, who averaged 13 points and six assists per game last season, will take his talents to Orford on Friday, Dec. 14, when his Wildcats debut at Rivendell.
