BRATTLEBORO -- The Colonels varsity boys basketball team hosts the first game of their regular season, tonight against Burr & Burton, at
"We have had a busy pre-season getting to know one another and working on our stuff," said coach Joe Rivers. "We look forward to representing our school, competing against challenging teams, and playing a game we really enjoy."
The Brattleboro team returns two seniors from last year’s squad: Jackson Batchelder and Tyler Higley.
Both were standouts in their respective fall sports participation and, together, they will lead the Colonels into battle. Patrick Gilligan is another senior who is joining the team this year.
"It is our first game, so we have been trying to get our systems in place," said Rivers. "The players have been very enthusiastic and have been working well together. Basketball is full of constant, real-time challenges that require problem-solving individually and collectively."
The Colonels seek to improve on last year’s 15-8 record. Brattleboro lost to the eventual state champions, Mt. Mansfield, in the semi-finals in early 2012. "Last time around we were a team full of seniors, and this year we will be a team of mostly juniors," said the BUHS coach. "On most nights we won’t be the biggest team on the floor, but as the season progresses, with some hard work, we hope to be the better team as we head toward the playoffs."
