WESTMINSTER -- The Bellows Falls-Hartford wrestling team participated in the annual ConVal Early Bird Tournament on Saturday. The tournament this year was held at Bellows Falls High School as the gymnasium at the ConVal High School is still under renovation.
Twelve schools from throughout New Hampshire and Vermont participated in the event. Exeter, NH High School won the tournament, with Plymouth, NH placing second. The Bellows Falls-Hartford wrestling team placed sixth.
The Bellows Falls-Hartford team was led by junior captain Nolan Viens, who wrestled the 145 pound weight class. Viens went 3-0, pinning all three of his opponents in the first period.
In the finals, Viens defeated Zack Kemos from Bishop Guertin, NH High School by pinning him in one minute and 37 seconds. Nolan looked great on the mat today, stated Bellows Falls-Hartford coach Claude Weyant.
"It is like he has picked up right where he left off last year where he had an outstanding season and placed second in the state," said Weyant.
Sophmore Austin Viens joined his brother Nolan in the finals at the 120 pound weight class, but fell short in the finals. Austin was defeated by Codi Gaudreau of John Stark, NH High School. Austin had a bye and two wins before the loss.
Juniors Patrick Libuda and Chris Earle at the 138 and 220 weight classes each took fourth place. Libuda went 3-2 and Earle 4-2 to end up in the fourth spot.
The Terrier lone senior wrestler, Josh Morey, went 3-2 on the day at the 152 pound weight class. Morey was another surprise competitor. Although he didn’t place in the top four, he had an outstanding day, and continues to progress each year.
Sophmores Steve Cerrone and Kyle Record went 3-2 on the day at the 138 and 160 pound weight classes. Although Record and Cerrone did not place in the top four, they did well. Record wrestled in a weight class higher than what he is expected to wrestle in during the season.
Freshman John Harris won his first high school match when he faced his first opponent in the 220 pound weight class. John went 1-2 during the tournament. For not having ever stepped on a wrestling mat until two weeks ago, he did great having his first varsity win.
Sophmore Shane Brown also participated in the tournament. Wrestlers Taylor Dressell and Walkker Scott did not participate.
The Terrier wrestling team next travels to Rutland on Thursday, where they will face both Rutland and Otter Valley
at 6 p.m. The Terriers’ next tournament will be the annual Granville, NY Lions Tournament, this Saturday at 9 a.m.
