NEWPORT -- The Hinsdale girls basketball team outscored Newport 22-0 in the first quarter and went on to win 58-29 on Monday night.
"We played tenacious defense," said Pacers coach Terry Bonnette. "We just came out strong, forced a lot of turnovers and scored on a lot of fast breaks."
Allison Scott racked up 22 points to lead the victors. Backcourt mate Skylar Bonnette chipped in with 17.
The 8-0 Pacers will play at Mascenic on Tuesday, Jan. 15.
Newport 68, Hinsdale 28
HINSDALE, N.H. -- With just six varsity players available, as five others were either sick or injured, the Pacers found themselves in a serious mismatch.
"We still played hard," said Hinsdale coach Brad Venice, whose team dropped to 1-3 overall. "Newport has good size and ability. They are just much bigger and faster than us."
Matt Boggio and Andrew O’Keefe scored 11 and eight points respectively for Hinsdale, which will next play at Monadnock.
BRATTLEBORO -- Greg Fitzgerald and Quin Grover each scored a dozen points to help Merrill Gas past Dompier Electric 28-16 in Saturday’s Junior Pro basketball showdown. Gavin Seppala paced D.E. with six points.
Will Taggard (4 points) and Arth Patel (3) led the Elks to a 14-12 decision over G.S. Precision. Nick Bingham had a team-high four points for GSP.
In Senior Pro action, Hotel Pharmacy outscored
Auto Mall’s Luke Williams and Dave Erunski of Fleming Oil each paced their team with 10 points when the car dealers downed the oilers, 28-25.
Middle School Hoops
TOWNSHEND -- Luc DuGrenier, Patrick Meyer and Dakota Fillion were the offensive stars when the Leland & Gray seventh grade boys took care of Twin Valley, 48-11, on Monday. The 4-1 Rebels will face Vilas on Thursday at 4 p.m.
Leland & Gray’s eighth graders got 28 points from Clayton Sanderson, 20 from Jake Wilkins and 14 more out of Bryce Karg during a 72-36 rout of Vilas. Aaron Claussen ran the show nicely and the Rebels held Green Mountain scoreless in the fourth quarter during a 30-14 victory over the Chieftains. Nick Fontaine and Willie Bush were the defensive dandies for the 2-2 Rebels, while Caleb Thibault dominated inside and scored a team-high eight points.
Julianne Liebow (15 points) and Kelsey Bostrom (10) were on fire as the Leland & Gray seventh graders topped Twin Valley 39-5. Kassidy Wyman anchored the defense.
Rachel Borgeson scored 10 points to lead the Leland & Gray eighth graders to a 25-22 victory over Twin Valley.
Men’s Rec Basketball
BRATTLEBORO -- Todd Roach (24 points), Dan Donaghue (19) and Marshall Gilbert (18) did the damage as DMI dropped the Marina 101-53 on Sunday to improve to 6-0. The Division 2 leaders have outscored their opponents by a combined 520-399 so far this season.
Kris Kachelmeyer went off for 35 points when his Local Sports Team denied Sporty’s/Lawton 88-76. The other big guns in recent games were: Christian Corey (33 points) of Chad’s Team, UNFI’s Scott Edwards (28), GSP’s Eric Fellows (28) and Kenny Howe (28) of W&B Maintenance.
The Game of the Week was Rice Appraisal’s 63-60 win over GSP Coatings. Four different players reached double figures for Rice, including Patrick Lallo (13 points), Steve Kapnal (12), Jim Layer (10) and Rod Payne-Meyer (10). Ryan Washburn drained three trifectas and finished with a game-high 23 points to lead GSP Coatings.
