CHITTENDEN -- The Brattleboro Union High School Nordic team competed in a seven-school classic race at Mountain Top Nordic Center on Tuesday. The 2.7 km course featured two laps and was hosted by Otter Valley High School. Teams from Brattleboro, Burr Burton Academy, Middlebury, Mt. Anthony, Rutland, and Woodstock entered varsity, junior varsity, and middle school skiers.

Once again in the girls’ varsity race, the matchup for first place was between Halie Lange (BUHS) and Chloe Levins (Rutland). Girls started in waves of two skiers every 15 seconds. Levins went out on her home course over a minute earlier than Lange, so the two never saw each other on the course. After the first lap, Levins had a 3.5-second lead on Lange. By the end of the second lap, Lange had made up the difference and in the end bested Levins by 10 seconds. Brattleboro’s Linnea Jahn had an off day, but still managed to finish 14th out of 40 racers.

The boys’ varsity race followed the same wave start format. The BUHS boys’ team made a strong showing with three racers in the top 20, including Graham Glennon (4th), Austin Lester (13th) and Oliver Pomazi (16th). Glennon showed excellent strength and technique in his first lap and was only eight seconds off the leader. During the second lap, he lost his balance and fell on a steep downhill turn costing him valuable time. The fourth scoring skier for BUHS was Declan King (23rd). An impressive showing for King considering it was his first varsity race at the longer 5+ kilometer distance. Colby McGinn and Sam Sherlock also first-year skiers jumped into the varsity race for their first taste of the longer distance.

The Colonel boys finished with a team score of 56, good enough for a third place team finish. Team scoring: 1)Mt Anthony 26; 2) Woodstock 39; 3) BUHS 56; 4) Rutland 74; 5) Middlebury 81; 6)Burr and Burton 104; 7)Otter Valley 147.

The next Nordic race will be held at Woodstock on Jan. 18 at 6 p.m.
