BRATTLEBORO -- Harris Hill Ski Jump announced today the lineup for each day of opening ceremonies for the annual ski jumping competition to be held Feb. 16 and 17 in Brattleboro. On Saturday, Feb. 16, Brattleboro Union High School student Kristina Meima will sing the national anthem. On Sunday, Feb. 17, acclaimed jazz and blues singer Samirah Evans will perform for her third consecutive year. Opening ceremonies will be held at noon each day, at the base of the jump.

Born in Sweden and a resident of Brattleboro since the age of seven, Meima has been singing since she can remember. A year after arriving to Brattleboro, she began participating in musical theater at the New England Youth Theatre in Brattleboro. Since then her life has been filled with dancing, music and performance. She plays trumpet with the Brattleboro Union High School band, and sings in a madrigals and an a cappella group. At age 16, Meima’s resume of performances is rich with experience. This is her second year performing at the Ski Jump.

A native of New Orleans, Evans was one of the city’s most popular jazz & blues vocalists until Hurricane Katrina caused her to seek a new home and move to Brattleboro with her husband in 2006.

Evans first performed at the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival in 1990, and became a regular fixture as either a leader or featured vocalist for 14 consecutive years.

She has toured Europe, Asia, and both North and South America as a headliner, and shared stages with a multitude of legendary artists from B.B. King and James Brown, to New Orleans own Queen of Soul, Irma Thomas.

The world’s top male and female ski jumpers from the US, Europe and Canada are scheduled to compete this year at the Harris Hill Ski Jumping Competition, presented by Pepsi, on a 90-meter jump, designed to International Ski Federation (FIS) specifications. Located in Brattleboro, spectators watch the jumpers launch from the take off and soar more than 300 feet at speeds of nearly 60 mph. The event is a festive atmosphere for the whole family with food, music, beer tent and souvenirs.

This year’s event will not only feature the annual Pepsi Challenge and the Fred Harris Memorial Tournament, but will also feature the only US Stop on the International Ski Federation’s FIS Cup and a stop on the United States American Ski Jumping US Cup Tour.
