BRUNSWICK, Maine -- Former Brattleboro Union High School track star Jacob Ellis competed recently for Bowdoin College at the New England Division 3 Indoor Track and Field Championships at Bates College.
Bowdoin’s Distance Medley Relay team took the gold medal at 10:12.46, setting a new meet record. The old record of 10:17.06 was set in 1983 by Williams College. The Distance Medley Relay consists of four legs: 1200 meters (junior James Boeding), 400 meters (senior Matthew Gamache), 800 meters (freshman Jacob Ellis) and 1600 meters (junior Coby Horowitz).
Ellis received the baton for the third leg about 15 meters behind the race leader. He started to close the gap between Middlebury in the final 200 meters, before handing off to Horowitz, completing his 800 split in 1:57. Horowitz quickly caught the leader and in the final lap took the lead, beating Middlebury by two seconds.
Ellis competed with the Bowdoin College Cross Country team this past fall, running a few races with the varsity team and plans to compete this spring with the Bowdoin outdoor Track and Field team.
