Rutland and Mount Anthony recently finished first in the 31st annual VPA Vermont Cheerleading State Championships.

Rutland scored 181 points to take the Division 1 crown. BFA-St. Albans (169) and Essex (159) rounded out the top three.

In Division 2, MAU struck gold with 108 points. The Patriots were followed by MSJ (98) and Mount Abe (88).

By virtue of placing in the top three, all six of the above teams have been invited to compete in the New England Cheerleading Championships on Saturday, March 16, in Lawrence, Mass.

BRATTLEBORO -- In recent action at the Gibson-Aiken Center, Rice Appraisal scored the most points of any team in a 95-69 victory over Members 1st Credit and Perra Law played the stingiest defense as they downed DMI 71-54.

UNFI’s Scott Edwards was the league’s top gun with 38 points, including 11 trifectas. Danial Santos of Community High School of Vermont and Kenny Howe of W&B Maintenance each racked up 34 points. They were followed by Cota & Cota’s Shawn Goodell (29 points), Brattleboro Subaru Ford’s Luke Euphrat (26 points) and Henry Ireland (25) of Local Sports Team.

The nailbiter took place on Friday, when Sporty’s/Lawton’s edged Local Sports Team 72-69. Bernard Jacobs, Brendon Smith and Xaviar Carter all scored 17 for the winners, which got 15 more from Corey Bauer.

Unified lost to Nashua South, 58-48, on Monday. Mackenzie Shultz distributed the ball underneath to Trevor Grover to assist his 24 points to lead the Pacers. Kobe Boudreau sank five baskets before nearly passing out. Sam Calderwood added eight points, while Glen Spencer scored his first six points of the season.
