RUTLAND -- The seventh-seeded Rutland girls basketball team defeated No. 10 Brattleboro, 31-20, in the first round of the Division 1 Tournament on Tuesday.
"We got the shots we wanted. The shots just wouldn’t quite fall. We just couldn’t buy a bucket," said BUHS coach Paul Freed, whose team finished the season with an 8-13 record.
Kaitlyn Delong scored 10 points to lead the Raiders, who had swept the Colonels in the two regular-season meetings.
Taylor Bird and Kayla Savage paced the purple and white with seven and four points respectively. Abbie Lesure showed great leadership at both ends of the floor according to her coach, while Bird, Savage and Lesure all played solid defense.
The Colonels were up 9-7 after the opening quarter, but trailed 17-10 at the half and 25-17 with eight minutes to go.
In other first-round contests on Tuesday, No. 8 BFA-St. Albans downed No. 9 Burr and Burton 45-36 and No. 13 MAU upset No. 4 South Burlington 53-36.

BRATTLEBORO -- In a couple of thrillers at the Gibson-Aiken Center on Monday, Chroma outscored Houghton 38-34 and Toyota of Greenfield downed Brucey’s Ballers 56-50.
